I am a great fan of this design. The buttercup setting allows light to flood all around the stone so its true colour can be seen. In this example, which is less common than some, there is a rich red oval garnet of 9mm by 7mm. The overall setting is 11mm by 9mm.
Inside the shank is the makers mark JSM alongside a hallmark for 9ct gold, having been assayed in Birmingham. There is no specific date mark for this one. The weight is 2.84g.
